EcoCAR 2: Plugging In to the Future named Mississippi State University, with its series-parallel plug-in hybrid electric vehicle design, the Year One winner at the EcoCAR 2012 Competition in Los Angeles. The 15 universities competing in EcoCAR 2 gathered for six days of judged competition for $100,000 in prize money.

Students from Mississippi State University placed first in the 2010 EcoCAR: The NeXt Challenge finals in San Diego, Calif. The Mississippi State University EcoCAR team chose to design an EREV hybrid with a 21.3 GM turbodiesel engine and 75 kW UQM generator in a series plug-in configuration.

The Ohio State University has taken first place in the final year of EcoCAR 3, an Advanced Vehicle Technology Competition, sponsored by the US Department of Energy (DOE) and General Motors Co. Ohio State EcoCAR built a series-parallel plug-in hybrid electric vehicle powered by E85. kWh energy storage system.

The US Department of Energy and its research and development facility, Argonne National Laboratory, will provide competition management, team evaluation and technical and logistical support. Students were encouraged to explore a variety of solutions including hybrid, plug-in hybrid, fuel cell, electric, and extended range electric vehicles.

General Motors is continuing its partnership with the US Department of Energy and Argonne National Laboratory for the EcoCAR 3 collegiate advanced vehicle technology competition. and will donate a Chevrolet Camaro to each one of the 16 universities that were recently selected for the exclusive competition. University students from The Ohio State University earned top honors at the 2009 finals of the EcoCAR : The NeXt Challenge competition in Toronto, Canada for their design of a Extended Range Electric Vehicle (EREV). Mississippi State University was awarded third place for its EREV, fueled by B20 biodiesel.
