A methanation plant expansion to the existing power-to-gas (PtG) facility in Falkenhagen, Germany has officially opened as part of the international €28-million (US$33.5-million) million) STORE&GO research project. This stored energy is then available as backup whenever there is an insufficient supply of solar and wind power.

Germany’s Minister of Economics and Technology, Sigmar Gabriel, together with representatives of power utility Stadtwerke Mainz AG, Siemens AG, The Linde Group and RheinMain University of Applied Sciences, inaugurated the construction of the Energiepark Mainz. This makes it possible to store electricity from renewable energy sources.

The major driver for the project is the need to decarbonize the electrical grid, protect it from cybersecurity attacks and make it more resilient. We will be replicating the entire California power grid on one campus. Solar panel output depends on the weather, for example, as do wind turbines.

UniEnergy Technologies LLC has signed a license agreement with Battelle to further develop and commercialize a vanadium redox flow battery developed at Pacific Northwest National Laboratory (PNNL) that holds promise for storing large amounts of renewable energy and providing greater stability to the energy grid.

In Germany, Mercedes-Benz Cars has eight vehicle and powertrain plants (Bremen, Rastatt, Sindelfingen, Berlin, Hamburg, Kamenz, Kölleda, Stuttgart-Untertürkheim), which either purchase electricity or operate their own power plants. Already existing highly efficient gas CHP systems additionally generate local heat and power at the factories.
