Emissions of Air Pollutants down in EU-27

The European Community’s air pollutant emission inventory report released by the European Environment Agency finds that in 2007, sulphur oxides (SO x ) emissions were down by 72 % from 1990 levels. EU-27 emissions of all four pollutants were lower in 2007 than in 2006.

A ban on certain domestic heating fuels, such as coal, also leads to improved air quality in low-income zones.

Study: air pollution causes 800,000 extra deaths a year in Europe and 8.8 million worldwide

Excess death rates were particularly high in eastern European countries, such as Bulgaria, Croatia, Romania and Ukraine, with more than 200 each year per 100,000 of the population. They focused particularly on PM 2.5 Worldwide, they found that air pollution is responsible for 120 extra deaths per year per 100,000 of the population.
