In 2015, Neste initiated a two-year study project to verify the methane emission reduction for a newly applied effluent treatment method.

Part of the challenge is locating sufficient quantities of hydrogen to enable large scale use of the CO 2 in waste gases. Lipids, in turn, are a proven pathway to jet, diesel and gasoline.

Neste Oil succeeded in achieving its target of increasing its use of waste and residue raw materials for refining into NExBTL renewable fuels by more than 400,000 tons in 2012: a total of 742,000 tons of these raw materials were used compared to 330,000 tons in 2011. Neste Oil currently sources palm oil from Malaysia and Indonesia.
