London could soon replace California as the electric car capital of the world. The policy, which exempts electric cars from hefty daily taxation, is resulting in increasingly significant vehicle choices for English consumers. Still I suspect there would be greater demand than initial supply.

Peugeot has begun pre-bookings for the i0n, its i-MiEV-derived electric car developed in partnership with Mitsubishi. Unveiled last July, the i-MiEV electric car can now be purchased in Japan, including government subsidies, for ¥2.84 Factoring in subsidies, the i-MiEV will effectively sell for around 2 million yen.

The UK Department for Transport (DfT) has confirmed details of the financial incentives that will be made available to buyers of electric cars from January 2011. Existing electric cars, such as the G-Wiz—the most popular consumer electric car on UK streets—and the MEGA e-City will not be eligible because they do not go fast enough.
