All chargers installed will additionally have to be ‘smart’ – allowing owners to tell their cars when to charge and up to what percentage, with the option of recharging only during times when energy demand is generally lower. By default, chargers will be set to send power to the cars during the night, when demand is lower.

Unlike the usual AC chargers that you might use at home, DC fast chargers don’t use the car’s own charger but send DC power straight to the EV batteries. This means you can get a lot of miles added to your car in a short charge time – just a few minutes – a really good thing for people with electric cars.
