EIA: CO2 emissions from US power sector have declined 28% since 2005

US electric power sector CO 2 emissions have declined 28% since 2005 because of slower electricity demand growth and changes in the mix of fuels used to generate electricity, according to the US Energy Information Administration (EIA). EIA calculated that CO 2 emissions from the electric power sector totaled 1,744 million metric tons (MMmt) in 2017, the lowest level since 1987.

T&E: Electric bus orders in Europe more than doubled to 1,031 units in 2017; ~9% share of new registrations

The number of battery-electric buses ordered in Europe more than doubled in 2017 compared to 2016, reaching 1,031 vehicles, according to a new analysis by environmental NGO Transport & Environment. T&E estimates this to be equivalent to around 9% market share of new registrations in 2018. The are currently about 1,600 electric buses are on European roads, with another 1,600 on order (as of mid-2018).

Hyundai delivered its first NEXO fuel cell SUV ( earlier post ) to Tom Hochrad of Ventura, California—the first US customer to drive off in the new NEXO, the only mass-produced fuel cell SUV for the US market, featuring a range up to 380 miles. New study finds gasoline stations vent up to 10x more benzene fumes than previously thought

ORNL demonstrates 120 kW wireless charging for vehicles; 97% efficiency

Researchers at the Department of Energy’s Oak Ridge National Laboratory (ORNL) have demonstrated a 120-kilowatt wireless charging system for vehicles—providing six times the power of previous ORNL technology and a big step toward charging times that rival the speed and convenience of a gasoline station fill-up. The wireless system transfers 120 kilowatts of power with 97% efficiency, which is comparable to conventional, wired high-power fast chargers.

Exeter team develops low-cost photoelectrode for spontaneous water-splitting using sunlight
