DUH says testing indicates use of defeat device in BMW 320d diesel

Results of testing on a Euro 6 BMW 320d diesel by the German environmental organization Deutsche Umwelthilfe (DUH), ZDF’s WISO and a software expert point to the use of inadmissible defeat devices, according to DUH. The organizations found that road-testing NO x emissions are up to 7.2 times higher than those produced on the dyno, which met the official NO x limit.

IBM scientists demonstrate 10x faster large-scale machine learning using GPUs

Scientists at IBM Research, together with their colleagues at EPFL, have developed a scheme for training big data sets quickly. It can process a 30 Gigabyte training dataset in less than one minute using a single graphics processing unit (GPU)—a 10x speedup over existing methods for limited memory training. The results, which efficiently utilize the full potential of the GPU, are being presented at the 2017 NIPS Conference in Long Beach, California.

Renault takes Level 4 EV SYMBIOZ demo car on the road

Researchers at Argonne National Laboratory, Tufts University and Oak Ridge National Laboratory have shown that mononuclear rhodium species, anchored on a zeolite or titanium dioxide support suspended in aqueous solution, can catalyze the direct conversion of methane to methanol and acetic acid using oxygen and carbon monoxide under mild conditions. In a paper in the journal Nature , they report that the two products form through independent pathways, allowing the tuning of the conversion.

Two new studies of road air pollution in London find detrimental effects on over-60s and unborn babies

Exposure to air pollution on city streets is enough to counter the beneficial health effects of exercise in adults over 60, according to new research led by Imperial College London and Duke University. These findings, published in as open-access paper in The Lancet , show that short term exposure to air pollution in built-up areas such as London’s busy Oxford Street can prevent the positive effects on the heart and lungs that can be gained from walking.
