Three teams will share $10million after successfully completing the Progressive Insurance Automotive X Prize. The X Prize winners are Edison2 of Lynchburg, Virginia; X-Tracer of Winterthur, Switzerland; and Li-ion Motors Corporation of Mooresville, North Carolina. One issue I frequently dealt with was the charger shutting down due to over heating. I would finish work and come out to find a car with less than full charge. Luckily most of the time it had charged enough to still get my home, but I found myself a couple of times sticking around work another hour or more. The temporary solution was to leave the trunk slightly cracked during non winter months and this did the trick.

Today A123 Systems, developer and manufacturer of their Nanophosphate lithium batteries, announced the grand opening of their manufacturing plant in Livonia Michigan. The California Air Resources Board adopted unanimously a regulation establishing a 33% renewable electricity standard. Under the regulation, one-third of the electricity sold in the state in 2020 must come from renewable sources of energy. The regulation adopted is the product of coordination and cooperation by ARB, California Public Utilities Commission, California Energy Commission and California Independent System Operator.

Saab Automobile and American Axle Manufacturing (AAM) have formed a jointly-owned company for the engineering, development and marketing of electric all-wheel drive systems, as well as electric and hybrid driveline systems. The new company, called e-AAM Driveline Systems, will be based in Trollhattan. The joint venture will commence operations on 1 October. e-AAM will develop and market an electric all-wheel drive system in a full service package.

Joule Unlimited, Inc., has been awarded a US patent covering its conversion of sunlight and waste carbon dioxide directly into liquid hydrocarbons that are fungible with conventional diesel fuel. Joule is the first to achieve and patent a direct, single-step, continuous process for the production of hydrocarbon fuels requiring no raw material feedstocks, enabling fossil fuel replacement at high efficiencies and costs as low as $30 per barrel equivalent. Pedego Electric Bikes and SiGNa Chemistry have developed an ultra-high-performance range extender for electric bicycles. The battery-fuel cell hybrid system is compatible with all existing Pedego bicycles and batteries. For every 1.5 lbs. of weight a rider carries, an additional 700 watt-hours of energy is available (compared to ~350 watt-hours for an ultra-high performance lithium-polymer battery at a weight of 7 lbs.).

A new global alliance comprising businesses and government leaders and led by the international NGO, The Climate Group, set an ambitious target to put one million additional EVs on the road by 2015, on top of EVs that automakers are already planning to bring to market. A new Albertsons supermarket in the San Diego, California community of Clairemont is generating nearly 90% of the electricity it needs with a PureCell 400 kW fuel cell from UTC Power, a United Technologies Corp. The PureCell 400 system uses a Fuel Processor (reformer) to reform natural gas to hydrogen to feed the Fuel Cell Stack. The project is estimated to cut carbon dioxide emissions by 478 metric tons each year compared to California non-baseload powerplants.
