Apparently Hyundai has abandoned their hydrogen delusions and decided that there might be a future in electric cars, after all. 99 mile range on lithium ion batteries, same supplier as the Volt, but 0-60 in 15 seconds? I had a pony when I was a kid that could move faster than that; ).

Volkswagen , for instance, launched a two-seat "1-Liter" concept car that gets a remarkable 170 miles per gallon. The company will begin sending formal safety campaign notices next week and is working to solve the problem, but strongly urges driver's of all affected models to remove their driver's side floor.

The 2010 Fisker Karma will be the world's first production series hybrid , or extended-range electric vehicle, when it comes off the line late this year. Customer deliveries will start next May. Just prior to the Karma's German debut at next week's Frankfurt Auto Show , the company released emissions figures for the car.

All-electric cars with the range of modern day petrol or diesel-equipped engines are still 20 years away, says Mercedes-Benz research and development boss Thomas Weber. Electric cars for city driving are just around the corner and technology exists to run a car for up to 120 miles without a top up. Getting to twice or three times that is still some way off, and that’s why Mercedes-Benz intend to pursue the hybrid route in the meantime, he explains.

Volkswagen will produce the high-efficiency EcoBlue CHP (combined heat and power) plant, which is to be driven by natural gas engines from Volkswagen. LichtBlick will market the plants as “ZuhauseKraftwerke” (home power plants) and will use them in a new, decentralized intelligent power supply scheme: “SchwarmStrom” (current swarm).

Here's a (pdf) link to a USPS report outlining a grand plan, released this week, to electrify a LOT of postal vans, all across the country. Looks like it's a fiscally smart move, too, which the Post Office dearly needs. BTW, it looks like Ford and Chrysler haven't actually forgotten how to build electric cars after all, because they've been quietly building a small fleet of electric postal vans for California since the beginning of 2009.

The Plug-in Prius will support an all-electric driving range of about 20 km (12.4 miles) miles at speeds up to 62 mph. The US House yesterday passed by a vote of 312-114 a bill that would authorize additional appropriations totalling $2.85 billion over the 2010-2014 period for the US Department of Energy (DOE) to support a broad range of research activities for advanced technology vehicles. H.R. 3246 , the “Advanced Vehicle Technology Act of 2009” covers research on light-, medium- and heavy-duty vehicles, as well as infrastructure and pilot programs.

At the Frankfurt Motor Show, Audi unveiled the e-tron. a high-performance electric sports car featuring four drive motors—two each at the front and rear axles—making the concept car a true quattro. Producing 230 kW (313 hp) and 4,500 Nm (3,319 lb-ft) of torque, the two-seater accelerates from 0 to 100 km/h in 4.8 seconds, and from 60 to 120 km/h (37 – 75 mph) in 4.1 seconds.

The US Department of Transportation (DOT) is awarding $100 million in Economic Recovery Act funding to 43 transit agencies for projects to reduce energy consumption and greenhouse gas emissions from both vehicles and facilities. Volkswagen and Varta Microbattery Ltd. will establish , subject to necessary regulatory approvals, a research collaboration to develop next-generation Li-ion systems for electric drive vehicles.
