An article in the New York Times criticised the so-called “cash for clunkers&# legislation that would give people vouchers worth as much as $4,500 to replace old cars with new ones. The popular car scrappage scheme is set to be extended the BBC reports. Concerns have been raised that car sales could fall dramatically and motor manufacturing jobs lost without continued support. The scrappage incentive gives a £2,000 discount to buyers of new cars whoagree to scrap their 10 years or more old car in return.

The US is set to be the next country to introduce a car scrappage scheme, the Financial Times reports. The original planned scrappage incentive was changed after foreign carmakers and their dealership networks protested that it ignored the contribution companies like Toyota and Honda make to the US economy.
