Power management company Eaton has introduced InfiniTrac , an electronically controlled, hydraulically actuated, variable-bias limited-slip differential that delivers optimized vehicle performance at any speed and traction condition. InfiniTrac uses standard gear oil and is virtually maintenance-free.

Eaton has introduced Procision, a new line of medium-duty dual-clutch transmissions, that delivers 8 to 10 percent better fuel economy than a similarly equipped vehicle with a torque converter automatic. Eaton announced that Volvo Trucks will offer the Eaton SmartAdvantage Powertrain in all VNL Series models in order to maximize fuel efficiency in linehaul and regional haul applications. The result is less preventative maintenance is required while engine fans cycle less, further reducing horsepower demand.

Eaton has launched the Fuller Advantage Series of heavy-duty transmissions that feature reduced weight and increased efficiency resulting in fuel economy improvements, an improved shift feel, as well as features contributing to lower preventative maintenance costs. The X10 architecture uses a belt-driven, high output 48-volt alternator and aftertreatment heater solution optimized for increasingly stringent emission standards, and will be scalable to other advanced combustion technologies. Its extended maintenance intervals can help reduce visits to the shop.

The NREL team collected and analyzed in-service fuel economy, maintenance, and other vehicle performance data on 11 hybrid (P100H) and 11 conventional diesel (P100D) step vans operated by the United Parcel Service (UPS) in Minneapolis. The differences in per-mile maintenance and operating costs were not statistically significant.

Funded by the DOE’s Advanced Vehicle Testing Activity (AVTA), NREL’s Fleet Test & Evaluation (FT&E) team performed a 12-month evaluation of six MY 2007 P70D hybrid vans and six MY 2006 P70D standard diesel vans at a UPS location in Phoenix, collecting and analyzing fuel economy, maintenance and other vehicle performance data.
