Chrysler’s Dodge brand introduced the 2014 Dodge Durango full-size SUV at the 2013 New York International Auto Show. The three-row SUV is equipped with an eight-speed automatic transmission that improves fueleconomy up to 9% (for the V-6 model) as well as a range of other enhancements.
As one example cited, the company has increased its use of high-strength steel and other lightweight materials to reduce vehicle weight, and thus improve fueleconomy, while still meeting standards for vehicle safety. Chrysler is also seeking to reduce electrical loads through application of higher efficiency fans and fuel pumps.
It will deliver improved fueleconomy, provide pure-electric range and help vehicles meet future emission regulations. It is the current transmission option on the Jeep Wrangler, Gladiator and Grand Cherokee; Wagoneer/Grand Wagoneer; Ram 1500; Dodge Charger, Challenger, Durango; and Chrysler 300 models.
Currently, the eight-speed transmission is available on the Jeep Grand Cherokee, Chrysler 300, Dodge Challenger, Dodge Charger, Dodge Durango and Ram 1500. That number has more than doubled to nearly 700,000 in the first 11 months of 2014. The Company sold more than 800,000 of these models in the US through November 2014.

Consumer Reports’ survey also reveals that some automakers—striving for improved fueleconomy—are clearly making more reliable turbocharged engines than others. The Dodge Grand Caravan continues to have “Average” reliability, while the Challenger, Durango, and Journey all stay “Below-Average.” —Jake Fisher.
