Chrysler’s Dodge brand introduced the 2014 Dodge Durango full-size SUV at the 2013 New York International Auto Show. The three-row SUV is equipped with an eight-speed automatic transmission that improves fuel economy up to 9% (for the V-6 model) as well as a range of other enhancements. EPA fuel economy estimates are not yet available.
As one example cited, the company has increased its use of high-strength steel and other lightweight materials to reduce vehicle weight, and thus improve fuel economy, while still meeting standards for vehicle safety. It will deliver improved fuel economy, provide pure-electric range and help vehicles meet future emission regulations. It is the current transmission option on the Jeep Wrangler, Gladiator and Grand Cherokee; Wagoneer/Grand Wagoneer; Ram 1500; Dodge Charger, Challenger, Durango; and Chrysler 300 models.
Currently, the eight-speed transmission is available on the Jeep Grand Cherokee, Chrysler 300, Dodge Challenger, Dodge Charger, Dodge Durango and Ram 1500. That number has more than doubled to nearly 700,000 in the first 11 months of 2014. The Company sold more than 800,000 of these models in the US through November 2014.
The Ram TRX and Dodge Durango Hellcat won’t continue past 2024. wouldn’t stop finding new ways to use the powerplant, but emissions and fuel economy standards are rightfully trimming the largest engines from many automakers’ catalogs. The move away from V8s is timely, but it likely came as a shock to many of the faithful Hellcat fans.
Consumer Reports’ survey also reveals that some automakers—striving for improved fuel economy—are clearly making more reliable turbocharged engines than others.
