In a news conference at the Japan National Press Club on Friday, Toyota Motor President Akio Toyoda said that the company plans to begin mass production of electric vehicles in the US in 2012, followed by US production of fuel cell vehicles in 2015. Delphi presented the work in a technical paper “Development of High-Pressure Common Rail Systems Incorporating Advanced Electronic Control Strategies for Future Heavy-Duty Vehicles,” at the 33 rd Vienna Motor Symposium last week. This concept system is expected to be ideal for heavily downsized applications and developing markets.

The study by Aaron Brooker, Matthew Thorton and John Rugh aimed to identify possible pathways to cost-effective vehicle electrification by evaluating a variety of scenarios and technology improvements. Even so, they found, extra battery costs in PHEVs and EVs outweighed the gasoline cost savings.

The PHEV (Plug-in Hybrid Electric Vehicle), a subset of the electric car, combines a primary electric motor with a much smaller back-up engine fueled with a hydrocarbon/biofuel mix. (In In this paper PHEV refers solely to the long-range PHEV of 60 miles (100 km) electric-only range.) But the real story is yet to be told.
