Data collected during a major 2010 state-federal atmospheric research project show that the first-in-the-nation regulation requiring ocean-going vessels to use clean fuel when near the California coast has been extremely effective in reducing sulfur dioxide pollution from ships, according to the California Air Resources Board (ARB).

The California Air Resources Board (ARB) and the US Environmental Protection Agency (EPA) have presented preliminary proposals aimed at closing compliance loopholes for medium- and heavy-duty diesel engines using SCR-based NO x emissions control systems for 2011 and later model years.

ARB will hold a one-day workshop on 2 March to discuss its preliminary thoughts and sources of information upon which to base the proposed standards and procedures. At the workshop, staff will also discuss these studies and welcomes input from stakeholders. LEVII criteria pollutant emission standards (PC/LDT1 and LDT2).

The project will replace 190 older diesel school buses with hybrid electric school buses to be used in school districts throughout Kentucky. The project will replace 180 diesel drayage trucks at the Ports of Los Angeles and Long Beach with LNG trucks. The project will replace 28 heavy-duty diesel refuse trucks with CNG trucks.
