Switching from diesel fuel to natural gas may hold advantages for the US heavy-duty trucking fleet, but more needs to be done to reach the full environmental benefits, according to a new white paper released by the Institute of Transportation Studies at the University of California, Davis, and Rice University.

AZETEC will test hydrogen as a zero-emissions alternative fuel to diesel for freight transportation, along with the refueling infrastructure and other systems that would be required for Alberta to implement this new fuel solution. Emissions Reduction Alberta (ERA) is committing more than C$7.3 million to the AZETEC project.

With the country’s commercial vehicle (CV) industry gradually adding LNG (Liquified Natural Gas) to its fuel portfolio, the Swedish truck maker has made an entry into this segment, with a 42-tonner FM420 LNG. In every ignition cycle, 5-10% of fuel burnt is diesel, followed by 90-95% LNG, which is pumped into the engine at 300 bar pressure.

UPS plans to invest approximately $50 million to build an additional nine liquefied natural gas (LNG) fueling stations, bringing the total number of stations to 13. The enhanced LNG fueling infrastructure will support the operation of approximately 1,000 UPS LNG tractors that will displace more than 24 million gallons of diesel fuel annually.

Excess heat and pressure from the exhaust gas are recaptured by the turbo-compound unit. The new Turbo Compound engine improves emissions, reducing the overall carbon dioxide footprint while still maintaining high average transport speeds. The turbine directs the recaptured energy to a gear link that pushes the crankshaft.
