For the first time in the history of the European automotive market, electric vehicles outsold conventional diesel engine vehicles, according to new data from the European Electric Car Report. However, until September 2021, EVs were still lagging behind diesel vehicles, a long-time favorite of the European driver.

As expected, the combination of fewer diesel registrations and more SUVs continued to have an impact on emissions. Despite an increase of EV models contributing positively to emission levels, the move away from diesel had a negative impact, one that the market could not offset. BEVs for every diesel car registered.

A new study by a team from Aarhus University in Denmark has found that car dealerships pose a significant barrier to electric vehicle adoption at the point of sale due to a perceived lack of business case viability in relation to gasoline and diesel vehicles. The powertrain sat 3.2pp ahead of diesel, compared to 8.6pp 12 months ago. Italy saw registrations fall by 40.9%, followed by Finland (down 32.7%), Sweden (down 30.6%), Ireland (down 29.5%), Spain (down 24.8%), Austria (down 21.4%) and Portugal (down 19%). Elsewhere, Finland and Austria declined by 17.4% respectively.

The gap to petrol shortened too, going from 11.8pp one year ago to 5.5pp. It was the second worst-performing powertrain in the month and was outperformed by diesel in terms of volume. This was followed by Finland (down 21.3%), Sweden (down 14.9%), Austria (down 11.7%) and Poland (down 0.2%). Hybrids took a market share of 29.6%

On the basis of unadjusted emission totals, the following 11 Member States reported exceedances of their NEC Directive national ceilings for one or more pollutants in 2015: Austria; Belgium; Denmark; Finland; France; Germany; Hungary; Ireland; Luxembourg; Spain; and Sweden. Six Member States exceeded their NO x emission ceilings in 2015.
