The automotive industry is living proof that private companies will rarely change their behaviors without a significant stimulus to that change, and furthermore one that needs to be mandated. Without the CAFE standard and stimulus monies to promote green vehicle tech, the industry would not be headed toward a greener horizon.

So far, none of the money has been doled out, but 75 companies, including three Detroit auto manufacturers, have submitted applications, according to the New York Times. The federal stimulus bill also provides a $7,500 tax credit for consumers who purchase plug-in vehicles.

Automakers unveiled more than a dozen production-ready, plug-in electric and hybrid electric vehicles at the Detroit auto show earlier this month, many of which will be on dealership lots between 2010 and 2012. Several automakers, including Ford, have partnered with Edison to ensure those cars can get their electricity from somewhere.
