To encourage consumer purchases of electric vehicles, federal grants and other funds have been awarded to install more than 15,000 home charge stations. The Chevrolet Volt is an electric vehicle with extended range capability, designed to drive up to 350 miles without stopping to recharge or refuel.

Introduced at the Hybrid Truck Users Forum (HTUF), the MT-EV WIV features a lightweight, aerodynamic design for improved efficiency. The battery pack provides up to a 100-mile (161 km) driving range on a single charge. The new design was engineered to allow for improved aerodynamics without giving up the functionality of the vehicle.

The FCCC electric WIV also marks the first commercial vehicle application of a Tesla Motors Li-ion battery pack, which provide up to a 100-mile driving range on a single charge. FCCC initiated our all-electric project well before stimulus money and federal grants were available for alternative-power transportation projects.

According to a 2006 study cited by the Administration, implementation of pending plans for the federally designated HSR corridors could result in an annual reduction of 6 billion pounds of CO 2 (2.7 The merit-driven process will result in federal grants as soon as late summer 2009. Earlier post.)

Key to this reduction has been the development and implementation of a plan that has improved the State fleet’s overall use of alternative fuels, the reduction of unneeded fleet vehicles, and reducing unnecessary vehicle miles traveled. 281,619 gallons gasoline equivalent (gge) of CNG and propane (7%). 216,723 gallons E85 ethanol (6%).

Tesla’s announcement Thursday that it was teaming up with Toyota to start making its $50,000 electric Model S at NUMMI, hiring 1,000 workers and possibly creating 10 times that number of jobs down the road, has brought hope back to Fremont, a 92-square-mile piece of Silicon Valley that had seemed shrouded of late with gloom.
