The Ford Escort began life in 1955, in Britain (just a year after World War II-era food rationing finally ended), as a cheapified version of the Ford Squire wagon. Here's one of those first-year Mazdafied Escorts, found in a Denver-area car graveyard. This one just squeaked past the 175,000-mile mark during its life.

Today's Junkyard Find is an example of the second type of Marauderization (not to be confused with Moroder ization ) within the world of Ford's Mercury Division. Starting in 1958, Ford's new MEL ( M ercury- E dsel- L incoln) big-block V8 engine was given the Marauder name when installed in Mercury models. Yes, I bought these badges.

The York facility is much closer to Heathrow Airport (to which there are cheap nonstop flights from Denver) than the one in Edinburgh , so we rented a Mercedes-Benz A-Class saloon and drove the four hours north to York (stopping at a breaker's yard near Nottingham to grab some Euro-market XJ Cherokee taillights, as one does).

I discovered a Mexican-market '06 Peugeot 407 in a Denver boneyard, earlier this year, and thought years would pass before the next time I'd hear the ghosts of André Citroën , Louis Renault , and Armand Peugeot singing La Marseillaise over a car graveyard. Another was the debut of the Ford Falcon as a 1960 model. The Crusher awaits.
