Here's one of those first-generation Fairlanes, found in a self-service boneyard just south of Denver, Colorado. Army staff car , a 1965 Dodge D-200 U.S. This car had a snow-encrusted oil painting by Stone, resting on the trunk lid when I arrived. This dusty sticker on the dash is a piece of obscure 1990s Denver history.

General Motors built more than two million Chevy Vegas , and they were everywhere on the roads of North America through about the second half of the 1980s. The Vega has been a junkyard rarity for decades now, but I just found six early Vegas all within a couple of rows of one another in a Denver self-service yard. Why do Vegas smile?
