It takes with kinetic energy that would normally be lost as heat through traditional mechanical friction brakes and stores it as electric energy in the battery. Fast-charging with a DC charger (with compatible vehicles) can cut the charge time to a half hour or less. A 220-volt home charging system cuts charging time by half or more.

Plugging in for short trips means all-electric driving Charging is also through regenerative braking that converts kinetic energy into electric energy and stores it in the battery when applying the brakes or coasting. The boxy design allows for storing larger items.
