And in a true smart grid, electric cars will not only be able to draw on electricity to run their motors, they will also be able to do the reverse: send electricity stored in their batteries back into the grid when it is needed. In effect, cars would be acting like tiny power stations.

A couple of drawbacks to consider might be the capitalization costs of building these stations and the batteries that they would have to have in stock. Obviously, with replaceable battery packs, they can both be charged at the optimal time and always be hanging around to serve as valuable electrical power storage for the grid.
