The first was the American NS Savannah , built in the late 1950s at a cost of $46.9 Seen here near the port of Seattle, in 1962, the NS Savannah was the first nuclear-powered merchant ship. Built in the late 1950s, the ship’s costs were too high for it to operate profitably, and it was deactivated at the end of 1971.
