EU project HyFlexFuel converted sewage sludge and other biomasses into kerosene by hydrothermal liquefaction (HTL); SAF

Green Car Congress

The EU-funded research project HyFlexFuel recently successfully produced biocrudes via hydrothermal liquefaction (HTL) from a variety of biomasses, including sewage sludge, food waste, manure, wheat straw, corn stover, pine sawdust, miscanthus and microalgae in a pilot-scale continuous HTL plant at Aarhus University (Denmark).

Audi partnering with Climeworks on CO2 direct air capture and storage

Green Car Congress

The Swiss company Climeworks is building the world’s largest direct air capture (DAC) and storage facility for converting atmospheric CO 2 to rock in Iceland. C using waste heat from a nearby geothermal plant to release the CO 2 molecules. Iceland is one of several places on Earth offering the ideal conditions for this process.

German power-to-gas facility opens green methanation plant; €28M STORE&GO project

Green Car Congress

In this second stage, hydrogen from regenerative energy sources is converted into methane (CH 4 ), i.e. synthetic natural gas, using CO 2 from a bio-ethanol plant. Type of CO2 source (biogas; waste water; atmosphere). Local consumers (low consumption; municipal region; rural area).

Empa researchers investigating new process for production of synthetic methane

Green Car Congress

Due to the high reaction temperatures, a proportion of the water is converted back into hydrogen by the water-gas shift reaction. Both hydrogen production and methanization continuously generate waste heat. Empa researchers see further potential for optimization in the heat required for this CO 2 desorption.

Audi steps up research into carbon-neutral synthetic fuels with new e-diesel pilot plant; power-to-liquids

Green Car Congress

Together with the partners Ineratec GmbH ( earlier post ) and Energiedienst Holding AG , the company has plans for a new pilot facility for the production of e-diesel in Laufenburg, in Canton Aargau (Switzerland). To produce it, the power-to-liquid plant converts surplus hydropower into synthetic fuel.

The Inside Story of Google’s Quiet Nuclear Quest

Cars That Think

It seemed to me that recent improvements in reactor designs gave nuclear plants even more potential to deeply decarbonize societies at reasonable cost, while operating safely and dealing with nuclear waste in a responsible way. Still, it turns out you can’t easily get a sample of nuclear waste like americium; you have to work up to it.
