With tuning, the catalyst can achieve a selectivity of 80% toward motor oil (C 21 –C 45 ). The Alterra technology transforms plastic destined for landfills back into petrochemical products that can be further refined into fuels, waxes and plastic production. A paper on their work is published in ChemSusChem.

They were able to convert amorphous polypropylene and everyday bags and bottles effectively to lubricants with yields up to 80+%. Quantification of critical properties, including pour point, kinematic viscosity, and viscosity index, indicates that the products are promising alternatives to currently used base or synthetic oils.

Researchers at the University of Oxford have developed a method to convert CO 2 directly into aviation fuel using a novel, inexpensive iron-based catalyst. These are important raw materials for the petrochemical industry and are presently also only obtained from fossil crude oil. The final product is usually a crystallized material.

A team at the University of Idaho has demonstrated that glycerol, a byproduct from biodiesel production, could be used as a substrate for producing drop-in gasoline-range biofuel. HydroWing, in partnership with Tocardo, introduced the THyPSO (Tidal Hydrogen production, Storage and Offtake), a concept that creates green hydrogen from the sea, contributing to the wider global decarbonization of energy systems. THyPSO has capacity to hold up to two weeks’ worth of hydrogen production in pressurized storage tanks.
