Researchers at The Ohio State University have used a chemical looping process to produce hydrogen from hydrogen sulfide gas—commonly called “sewer gas”. Hydrogen sulfide is emitted from manure piles and sewer pipes and is a key byproduct of industrial activities including refining oil and gas, producing paper and mining.

Researchers at the University of Oxford have developed a method to convert CO 2 directly into aviation fuel using a novel, inexpensive iron-based catalyst. These are important raw materials for the petrochemical industry and are presently also only obtained from fossil crude oil. The final product is usually a crystallized material.

The EU-funded HyMethShip project developed a system that innovatively combined a membrane reactor, a CO 2 capture system, a storage system for CO 2 and methanol as well as a hydrogen-fueled combustion engine to power ships.
