After spending the past year and a half converting a Porsche 914 to an electric vehicle, I decided to expand my horizons by designing an open-source electric vehicle (EV) conversion kit for a commonly used car. With rising gasoline prices, I believe the demand for freeway capable electric vehicles is going to increase over the next few years.
Under a Technology Agreement with EEStor, ZMC holds the worldwide exclusive rights to incorporate EEStor’s EESU for new passenger vehicles up to 1,400 kilograms curb weight (net of batteries); golfcarts, Low Speed Vehicles and certain utility vehicles; and the conversion of any class of used internal combustion 4-wheel vehicles to electric.
I'll have to modify the circuit with a voltage doubler in the final stage to work with 8-volt golf-cart batteries for the 914 EV kit. By clicking on the images, you can get a much larger version of the pictures. Any feedback on how to improve the circuit would be welcome.
So, given that it's cold and rainy for a few months and I have the suspension, I decided to start the conversion, despite not having all the parts from ElectroAuto yet. Maybe I'll take a day off to go to A & P as well as Farwest GolfCarts to pick up some old 8V golfcart batteries for desulfation testing.
I am leaning towards a golfcart or forklift motor. All the Golfcart motors I have been finding on the net are either 10 or 19 spline. Should I look for a straight axle with chain conversion? I have the resources to create an adapter to convert the 13 spine either up or down to match a golfcart motor.
The EEStor EESU—a high-power-density multi-layered barium titanate ceramic ultracapacitor—is expected to provide energy densities of more than 450 Wh/kg and more than 700 Wh/L; charge in minutes; and have extremely long life.
They finally responded last night and apparently they're completely buried under the demand for EV conversion kits. On a brighter note, John Benson (who lives a ten minute drive away) showed me his 914 EV conversion car today. It looks like this is going to take some patience.
The 914 AC kit uses 8V golfcart batteries and I'm wondering if different batteries like Hawkers or Optima Yellow-Top batteries would be better. Both US-Battery and Trojan have 8-volt golf-cart batteries. With the AC system, I'll probably be pulling less amps and am looking forward to the extended range.
After much time on the phone with UPS Freight, the 8-volt golfcart batteries finally showed up today! Although the Bill of Lading clearly stated that this was a residence requiring a liftgate, UPS seemed to overlook that part of the order. Here's the semi that showed up at my doorstep to block off the street.
Marine applications and locomotives are not eligible under this FOA, nor are prototype or novelty vehicles, golfcarts, snowmobiles and other off-road recreational or sport vehicles.
I should be getting the 18 8-volt golf-cart batteries from American Battery Company early next week. I've sent three e-mails and one phone call to Electro Automotive asking about the status of the battery racks/boxes and received no reply. As you might imagine, I'm a bit frustrated with this and don't really know what to do next.
These high-capacity 8-volt golf-cart batteries are 70 pounds apiece. I got this battery strap at a Yamaha golfcart dealer. Tonight was an evening of heavy lifting. I'll definitely take some ibuprofen before tomorrow. Here are the batteries in the front box. The fuel compartment box. And the rear box.
If you hadn't read before, the 18 8-volt golfcart batteries add 800 pounds to the weight of the car, so the suspension needs upgrading. I received the suspension parts from ElectroAuto today. It looks like I got new springs(blue), torsion bars (red) and two sets of matching shock absorbers (white/silver).
Above is a picture of a heavily sulfated 8-volt golf-cart battery I acquired yesterday. Can one revive a mostly dead battery? Several internet sources say yes. It had a floating voltage of 7.85 when I got it and needed half a gallon of distilled water to fill it back up.
I'm not sure how much current these golfcart batteries are designed for. If my ammeter from West Marine is correct, then just cruising takes about 50 amps and every time I accelerate even slightly, the current goes up over 200 amps.
Regarding the 8V golf-cart batteries, Mike also mentioned that they tended to either last 3-4 years or die right away (infant mortality). Apparently I'm the only person with an operational AC kit currently, although several other people are hot on the trail to finishing theirs. Mike doesn't have an AC kit 914 back at the ranch.
A lot of parking lots have been converted to LED lights, and during that conversion, the electricity draw on that circuit was decreased, because the LEDs use less current, so you have a little excess capacity in that circuit, and if you tie into that, now you can cover things like cloudy days or rainy days much better.
On a more dangerous note, I ordered my 18 USBatt 8-v golf-cart batteries from American Battery company in California. I'm a bit concerned because the nearby spinning CV joint could entangle with the wire if I don't tie it down correctly.
It's a pity that we have to remove this, but the size of the golf-cart batteries clearly interfere with the latch. If I really get impatient, I think I'll line up the 18 8-volt golfcart batteries on the floor and run two battery cables into the controller just to see if I can get the motor to turn.
The 8-volt golfcart batteries arrived over 24 days ago and have just been sitting on the garage floor, discharging. This is inside the driver-side fuel compartment looking forward. The two one-inch holes will get grommets for the high-current battery cables connecting the front batteries with the middle pack.
“The first year we were invited, we planned to show a few conversions, including a VW bus and a VW Bug,” Douglass explained. Unfortunately, when the assigned HEAA member arrived at the auto show with his Model S, security guards in golfcarts quickly converged, blocking the entrance.
His goal was to get 100,000 or more DIY conversion projects going,” agreed GEVA member Daniel Howard. Of course, this was while he was manufacturing and distributing parts for conversions.”. The only EV he was familiar with was a golfcart, so he tried playing around with that, and eventually converted a Beck into electric.”
In addition to the Roadster, a whole host of little electric cars will be exhibited at the fair alongside an array of electric scooter and quadricycles: Mega eCity, Mega Multitruck, E-Z-GO RXV (golfcart), Sanifer L7e, Sanifer L6e, Toyota Prius (Plug-in and Flexible-fuel technology models) and ZEV Seven.
Most of us just did our own conversions. But there are others of us who still have an interest in the conversion aspect and the more technical end of things.” I cut the frame and extended it, and then a guy from the DEVC donated a golfcart motor,” he explained. “I David McNeil’s electric conversion 1971 AMC Hornet.
BikeOn electric bike conversion kit The BikeOn conversion kit is one of the most highly engineered kits I’ve seen for converting a standard pedal bike into an e-bike. Shandoka electric motorcycle conversion kit for classic motorcycles This one is absolutely fascinating.
The dealership experience is not ideal for many EV shoppers, so unfiltered conversations with EV owners can be a great way to learn. You’ll see solar cars, golfcarts, wind energy providers, local dealerships and Harley’s Livewire electric motorcycle, among others.
In Italy, tourists will be limited to 20,000 a day in Pompeii, and new legislation in Florence may prevent tourists from using golfcarts to tool around. So the conversation needs to be, how do we change the metrics of success? There are signs that new metrics are emerging.
We spoke to EV community member and friend of the channel Mr Zarryl Lobo, who has 30+ years of experience building custom electric golfcarts and refurbishing old EVs. This will lead to more conversions. Even 1000 per annum is too low according to experienced people in the automotive space.

Road rallies were held in Juneau, Alaska , where local and state elected officials riding the city’s first electric bus led the way, and in Muskegon, Michigan , where 70 participants in 40 cars, motorcycles, and a golfcart, navigated a 150-mile circuit from Muskegon to Holland to Grand Rapids and back to Muskegon.
As electric cars move from garage conversions into mass production over the next few years, public adoption could be held back by something more crippling than battery technology: the notion that electric cars are no more than unattractive golfcarts. Using the.

His interview with President Biden may prove to be an interesting conversation. I think he should get a certain amount of credit for leading the charge because before Elon, [people would say] ‘it’s a golfcart,’” Jay Leno said. In most conversions cost is about the same because of needless weight. Lead batts are around 98% recycled. In EV’s they do need replacing in about 5 yrs if done right. But that cost in a built as an EV is much less than an ICE’s costs by about 1/2. Now add much cheaper materials and NiMH is now obsolete.
