After spending the past year and a half converting a Porsche 914 to an electric vehicle, I decided to expand my horizons by designing an open-source electric vehicle (EV) conversion kit for a commonly used car. This project started about a month ago when I became co-chair of the Oregon Electric Vehicles Association.

The conversion process has started and the Civic is out of commission and up on jack stands. The electric 914 has been relegated to the driveway until the conversion is done or at least until I roll that sucker out of the garage. Classic Red 914 AC vs. Modern Blue Civic DC conversion! Death to the gasoline engine!

GM has announced plans for public sales in 2010, and almost every carmaker now says it will sell PHEVs or highway-speed battery electric vehicles (BEVs) sometime after 2010.
