My initial thoughts are very positive and I recommend this for new people converting EVs. I think the next major project (If I don't go out and purchase a Nissan "Leaf" outright) is to upgrade the batteries to lithium-ion types when the AGM lead-acid batteries die. Hopefully that will be two years out.

Conversions are mostly for the Prius, with a few for the Ford Escape/Mercury Mariner hybrid SUVs. At that point, we expect the aftermarket companies prices to have come down sufficiently so that their conversions will be attractive to owners of hundreds of thousands of hybrids already on the road. So far, most start as hybrids.

I spent all day today going through those hundred technical articles on SOC (state-of-charge) and SOH (state-of-health) algorithms for lead-acid batteries. They were all fascinating, but the one I really liked involved a Kalman filtering algorithm to constantly estimate the internal parameters of the lead-acid battery.

at least, the recycling infrastructure for the well-established lead-acid batteries is robust. lead-acid batteries have a far better recycling rate than even aluminum bottles — over 90% of lead-acid batteries are recycled. None of the new electric cars are planning to use old-tech lead acid batteries.
