ORNL team achieves diesel-like efficiency with SI engine

Green Car Congress

A team at Oak Ridge National Laboratory (ORNL) has achieved diesel-like efficiency in a single-cylinder spark-ignition (SI) research engine while maintaining compatibility with stoichiometric 3-way catalyst (TWC) systems. 1) with cooled exhaust gas recirculation (EGR) and high compression ratio (13.3:1 Splitter et al.

Study finds diesel oxidation catalyst eliminates mutagenicity of diesel exhaust in gas phase

Green Car Congress

A team of researchers in Germany has found that the mutagenicity of diesel engine exhaust (DEE) is eliminated in the gas phase by a Diesel Oxidation Catalyst (DOC), but only slightly reduced in the particle phase. Total particle mass (TPM) was reduced by 50% with the DOC in common diesel fuel and by 30% in the other fuels.

Continental showcases “Super Clean Electrified” connected, optimized 48V mild hybrid diesel; post-Eu6d

Green Car Congress

At the 38 th International Vienna Motor Symposium this week, Continental is showcasing a 48-volt hybrid diesel vehicle which meets very stringent RDE (real driving emissions) limits on CO 2 and NO x. The first 48-volt diesel hybrid has already gone into production in Europe, and a second production launch is already in the pipeline for 2017.

Fraunhofer developing process to ferment steel exhaust gases to fuels and chemicals

Green Car Congress

Fraunhofer researchers in Germany have developed a process for the conversion of CO-rich exhaust gases from steel plants into fuels and specialty chemicals. In addition to the exhaust gases, syngas—similar gas mixtures from home and industrial waste incineration—can also be used for the engineered process.

Jülich evaluation of power-to-fuels recommends DME, OME3-5 and n-alkanes as diesel substitutes

Green Car Congress

An evaluation of the implementation possibilities of power-to-fuel (PTF) technologies by a team from Forschungszentrum Jülich GmbH in Germany recommends the PTF products DME, OME 3-5 and n-alkanes as suitable diesel alternatives for the transportation sector. In addition, fossil diesel would no longer be required. Earlier post.)

Achates Power opposed-piston diesel for TARDEC will demonstrate multi-cylinder configuration

Green Car Congress

Achates Power says that its 2-stroke OP engine offers higher best point brake thermal efficiency than diesel or gasoline engines. Opposed-piston engines have been around since the Junkers Jumo 205 diesel aviation engine in the 1930s. Since the pistons cyclically expose or occlude the exhaust and intake ports, there is no valve train.
