Ever since Lwanga Herbert was a youngster growing up in Kampala, Uganda, he wanted to create technology to improve his community. The devices were recognized by the Uganda National Council for Science and Technology. Herbert now works to use technology to address challenges faced by Uganda as a whole, such as high neonatal death rates.
KIMLAB ] Today, robots by and large exist in industrial environments, and are painstakingly coded for specific tasks. This unique feature increases "Capability", which enables it to connect to various tools (end-effectors) to perform multiple tasks for various applications, and "Mobility", which enables it to move in any direction.
By tackling community needs in the areas of access and abilities, education and outreach, human services, and the environment, students participating in EPICS in IEEE are gaining firsthand experience in marrying engineering and community. The center was built by students from Kyambogo University of Kampala, Uganda.
