He left there in 1966 to join the University of Cambridge as an assistant director of research. After three years, he moved to the United States to work for AT&T Bell Labs in Holmdel, N.J. He earned his bachelor’s degree in aeronautical engineering in 1958 from the University of Bristol , in England.
