The proof-of-concept test is building on Cummins’ existing technology leadership in gaseous-fuel applications and powertrains. The projected investment in renewable hydrogen production globally will provide a growing opportunity for the deployment of hydrogen-powered fleets utilizing either Cummins fuel cell or engine power, the company says.

Achates Power was awarded a $5-million cooperative agreement from the US Department of Energy in 2020 for a new two-cylinder prototype demonstration and concept design of a next-generation medium-duty commercial vehicle opposed-piston engine. Demonstration vehicles will be on the road in 2021 in a commercial fleet application.

The fleet will run on the Busway Bus Rapid Transit (Line 4) route connecting the historic center of Nantes with municipalities on the southern side of the river Loire. Since the route’s inauguration in 2006, passenger numbers have increased, leading to overcrowded buses.
