Based on the reveal of its Traveler SUV and Terra pickup in concept versions shown last fall, including prices said to start under $60,000, and executive comments thus far, Scout has laid out some of the basics for the brand. There is no current body-on-frame SUV and theres never been an EV with a range extender.

The vans themselves are based on the concept Town and Country EV that was unveiled last Fall by Chrysler. However, because of the duty cycle used by the Postal Service, which generally amounts to only about 18-20 miles per day on a fixed route, these vehicles are being built without the range extender seen on the concept.

At these prices, people are buying the "environmental feature" -- they want to be among the first owners of the worlds cleanest extended-range vehicles. Today youd do it to be one of the first to drive the worlds cleanest extended range vehicle; in the future, youll do it because its an obvious and affordable win!

Competition is going to force them to produce a comfortable, usable, extended range EV for that price, and I will just have to wait. ↓ ↑ report 7 jharlan 2:20PM (4/25/2009) You know, I still just have no use for a toy car at a real car price. o well I guess they think all yanks hate diesels.

Gallery: Plugging in at home Battery swap stations are a concept often associated with Better Place , an EV infrastructure company. For extended range I guess one could carry a fairly modest generator set in the trunk to avoid ever being stranded. The modular concept also allows scalability even within your own car.
