Researchers at the Dalian University of Technology have proposed a novel method to control premixed charge compression ignition (PCCI) phasing in internal combustion engines in all load operations. The application of HPE is also beneficial to the fuel consumption and emissions because of its several flexible operation modes.
The prototype is of the naturally-aspirated Split Cycle gasoline engine, and is intended to be a proof of the basic technology of the split cycle with firing after Top Dead Center (one of the key attributes of the engine and cycle). The new FOA supports the President’s EV Everywhere Grand Challenge, which seeks to make the United States the first country to produce a wide array of plug-in electric vehicle (PEV) models (including plug-in hybrids and all-electric vehicles) by 2022 that are as affordable and convenient as current gasoline powered vehicles we drive today.
It is being unveiled as a one litre petrol unit and it is expected to produce around 80 per cent fewer toxins than a typical internal combustion engine.
