ORNL Researchers Find Thermochemical Exhaust Heat Recuperation In Internal Combustion Engines Could Provide Substantial Boosts in Second-Law Efficiency

Green Car Congress

When reforming is not used, the fuel and exhaust pass through CV2 unchanged. The basic concept of TCR involves using exhaust heat to promote on-board reforming of hydrocarbon fuels into syngas (a mixture of carbon monoxide and hydrogen). The syngas is then burned in the engine in place of some or all of the original fuel.

Motiv Engines introduces 2nd-generation split-cycle concept; MkII Clarke-Brayton heavy-duty engine being designed for LNG

Green Car Congress

It expands all the way to ambient pressure before the exhaust stroke. The power is produced in almost a 50-50 split between the combustion (central) and exhaust (largest) pistons. Transfer from the combustion cylinder to the exhaust cylinder takes place when the exhaust cylinder volume is minimal. 27-1, book G1011A, 1996.

Scuderi Releases Video Footage of Running Split-Cycle 1L Prototype

Green Car Congress

Split-cycle engines separate the four strokes of intake, compression, power, and exhaust into two separate but paired cylinders. The compressed air is then transferred through a crossover passage from the compression cylinder into the second cylinder, where combustion and exhaust occur. The Scuderi Engine.

New split-cycle concept to control diesel HCCI combustion

Green Car Congress

The basic idea of the new Diesel combustion illustrated in this paper is to control the heat release rate by a gradual supply of an almost homogeneous charge, without relying on exhaust gas recirculation to moderate the reaction. Thus the HCPC range can extend to all engine operating conditions, including very high loads. Tamagna, D.,
