Section of the MkII Clarke-Brayton split-cycle engine. Motiv Engines, LLC introduced the second-generation of its engineconcept dubbed the MkII Clarke-Brayton Engine, which it intends to develop into a heavy-duty on-highway engine fueled by liquid natural gas (LNG). Click to enlarge.
FEV) a leading developer of advanced powertrain and vehicle technologies, will exhibit a lean burn engineconcept at the SAE 2011 World Congress that has been modified to run on Compressed Natural Gas (CNG). FEV developed ATAC more than a decade ago, targeting large-bore engines in stationary and heavy-duty applications.
The H-engine—basically two separate engines housed within the same engine block—comprises two switchable parallel piston banks, independently fueled by gasoline and CNG. Startup Eco-Motive has developed what it calls the first dual-fuel “H” engine; it recently received a patent (# 8807098 ) on the design.
Schematic model of a wave disk engine, showing combustion and shockwaves within the channels. The wave disc engine, a new implementation of wave rotor technology, was earlier developed by the Michigan State group in collaboration with researchers from the Warsaw Institute of Technology. Prototype of a Bladon Micro-Jet engine. A consortium led by micro gas turbine company Bladon Jets recently secured investment from the UK Technology Strategy Board to develop an Ultra Lightweight Range Extender (ULRE) for next-generation electric vehicles. Australia-based Revetec is designing what it calls the Controlled Combustion Engine (CCE)—a cam-drive gasoline spark-ignited internal combustion engine that is smaller, lighter, cleaner, less expensive to manufacture and that produces higher torque due to higher mechanical transfer than equivalent conventional engines.
Rendering of the Grail Engine. Grail Engine Technologies , the designer of a two-stroke engine using forced semi-homogeneous charged compression ignition (FS-HCCI) combustion, has adopted the Pulstar pulse plugs from Enerpulse ( earlier post ). Elements of the Grail Engine. Click to enlarge. Matthew Riley.
Turbocharged HCPC engine scheme. A team from Universita degli Studi di Pisa (Italy) and Rolf Reitz at the University of Wisconsin-Madison are proposing a novel combustion concept—Homogenous Charge Progressive Combustion (HCPC)—based on a split-cycle principle to control HCCI combustion in diesel-fueled engines.
The Scuderi Engine is a split-cycle design that divides the four strokes of a conventional combustion cycle over two paired cylinders. The engine has two crossover passages that connect the two cylinders, which separate the four strokes of the pistons. a more efficient internal combustion engine. Earlier post.). Earlier post.).
of the OX2 Engine. Advanced Engine Technologies. says it has reached the final development stage of its OX2 rotary engine, achieving a performance objective of more than 300 lb-ft (407 N·m) of torque along with 46 hp (34 kW) at an approximate operating speed of 760 rpm. Exploded view. Click to enlarge. OX2 in a test rig.
Schematic of downsized and supercharged four-stroke hybrid pneumatic spark injection engine. The reduction in fuel consumption is obtained mainly through enabling the effective use of a heavily downsized engine, rather than from regenerative efficiency. The hardware concept. liquid air) Dearman piston engine. Source: Dearman Engine Company. The work was conducted by a collaboration including industrial partners Arup, Dearman Engine Company, E4 Tech, Highview, Messer Group and Ricardo, as well as academics from the Universities of Leeds, Birmingham, Strathclyde, Brighton and Imperial College London.
Researchers at the Dalian University of Technology have proposed a novel method to control premixed charge compression ignition (PCCI) phasing in internal combustion engines in all load operations. It compresses the pressurized gas produced by exhaust gas turbocharger, comprising fresh air and exhaust gas introduced from the EGR valve.
Since internal combustion engines will remain the primary mode of choice for mobility in the foreseeable future, both alternative (renewable) fuels and high-performance combustion concepts/ engines using fuels adapted for that purpose will be preferred for reducing the combustion impact on climate change.
A German company, vv-tec GmbH , is developing a compact piston-driven turbine—the Reinhardt Turbine, named after its inventor—that it says is a two-cycle (gas and steam) thermodynamic process machine that can be built with conventional components and can achieve efficiency of at least 60%. The engine components are contained within a sphere.
The partnership involves using select conventional vessels from EPS’ existing tanker fleet that use MAN engines to be retrofitted, allowing them to be powered by methanol and ammonia which will be supplied by OCI. Also, EPS will construct newbuild vessels with MAN engines powered by the same two alternative marine fuels.
UK-based Libertine FPE has built a demonstration prototype of its linear electrical machine for what it is calling “Digital Piston Motion Control” in free piston engine applications. This technology will allow researchers to develop future combustion engines free from the piston motion constraints dictated by the crankshaft.
Dutch start-up ECONAMIQ is developing a novel engine technology which saves up to 20% in fuel consumption. The “ECONAMIQ principle” uses flexible over-expansion in combination with cylinder deactivation technology to increase performance and efficiency without significantly changing the engine layout or architecture.
Furthermore, natural gas will be investigated as the fuel of the system. The control method of linear generator and the movement of free-piston will be investigated, and special attention will be [paid to] the synchronization of th left and the right pistons. —Huang et al.
