Shell Lubricants announced the arrival of its first shipment of gas-to-liquid (GTL) base oil at the Port of Houston. The product, the first from the Qatar-based Pearl GTL plant to reach the Americas, will be stored at a hub in Houston and routed to Shell Lubricants’ GTL-enabled blending facilities throughout the United States.

Shell integrated its supply chain with its gas value chain in Pearl GTL, Qatar, in order to provide Shell PurePlus Technology-enabled engine oils around the world. This world-scale facility is the largest source of GTL products and the only commercial source of GTL base oil today.

Shell’s Gulf Coast GTL facility would be one of the first of its kind built to commercial scale in the United States. Shell built the first commercial GTL facility in Malaysia in 1993. In 2011, Shell began production at Pearl GTL in Qatar, a joint venture between Shell and Qatar Petroleum, the world’s largest GTL plant.
