Ford is opening an E-Transit registration site today for commercial customers ahead of order banks opening by July. To date, more than 450 commercial customers in North America, including 200 top fleets and fleet management companies, have said they’re interested in purchasing the E-Transit.

The Ford E-Transit BEVs are manufactured in Kansas City, Missouri.

The new facility—Smith’s second US manufacturing, sales and service center—will not affect production or job levels at Smith’s headquarters in Kansas City, Mo. Smith will lease a 90,000 square foot building near Hunts Point in the South Bronx and make investments in renovations, equipment, training and other project costs.

Smith Electric Vehicles US (SEVUS) will finalize the purchase of its United Kingdom-based parent company, Smith Electric Vehicles (UK), creating the world’s largest manufacturer of commercial electric vehicles. The purchase will be split into 20 payments, payable monthly, with the first payment made on completion of the sale.

Smith Electric produces the Newton, which is the only medium duty (class 4-7) all-electric commercial truck on the GSA schedule. The trucks will be built in Smith Electric’s Kansas City, Mo., plant, and are scheduled for delivery to Camp Pendleton in February 2011.
