They wanted to see whether an electric vehicle could feed electricity back to the grid. The company’s president, Tom Gage , dubbed the system “vehicle to grid” or V2G. And EV owners would become entrepreneurs, selling electricity back to the grid. And indeed, that’s how promoters of vehicle-to-grid technology perceive the EV.

ABB and Volvo Buses are partnering to co-develop and to commercialize electric and hybrid buses with open standards-based direct current (DC) fast charging systems. That system enables onboard batteries to be charged in 15 seconds with a 400 kW boost at selected stops using a roof-mounted system (“Flash station”).

Although both can be caused by the same phenomena, transients are more likely the result of nearby lightning strikes and step changes in loading on the grid, while surges are more likely the result of the same phenomena occurring much farther away (the intervening grid equipment and distribution lines softening up the disturbances, so to speak).
