But very few consumers will come up with BrightDrop , the name GM has given to a new unit that builds electric commercial vehicles: full-size vans and even electric cargo containers.

After spending the past year and a half converting a Porsche 914 to an electric vehicle, I decided to expand my horizons by designing an open-source electric vehicle (EV) conversion kit for a commonly used car. With rising gasoline prices, I believe the demand for freeway capable electric vehicles is going to increase over the next few years.

Ignoring the briefly popular commercial electrics around at the turn of the last century, EVs have been experimental concepts or limited edition runs until relatively recently. Battery-gasoline hybrids go back more than 20 years to the first Toyota Prius, but real mainstream battery-only electric EVs are only in their second decade.

Methanol-to-gasoline process flow diagram. The resulting methanol would be blended with crude and transported via the trans-Alaska oil pipeline to Valdez, where it would be extracted from the oil and processed via Methanol-to-Gasoline technology into gasoline. This year, however, as hybrids have gained in popularity amid high gasoline prices, Dr. Frank, now 72 years old, is getting some traction: A U.S. Saturn and a 200-horsepower electric motor.

Scientist have confirmed that unlike gasoline cars, plug-ins will get cleaner as they get older -- because our power grid is getting cleaner. The comparison keeps being raised, though studies are conclusive: The "well-to-wheel" emissions of electric vehicles are lower than those from gasoline internal combustion vehicles.
