Four companies—Pathfinder Renewable Wind Energy, Magnum Energy, Dresser-Rand and Duke-American Transmission—have proposed a first-in-the-US, $8-billion green energy initiative that would bring large amounts of clean electricity to the Los Angeles area by 2023. million megawatt-hours per year vs. 3.9 million megawatt-hours.

Nevada utility NV Energy’s largest battery energy storage system sits on a former coal-fired power plant site and will save customers a lot of money. The new BESS is on the site of the former 557-megawatt (MW) coal-fired Reid Gardner Generating Station, which was demolished in 2019. Energy Vault will maintain the system.

The new Lathrop facility is likely a dramatic increase in production rate, considering Giga-Nevada, which produces numerous Tesla products , was previously the only production location for the Megapack. In the post shared on Instagram, Tesla states the new facility can produce over 10,000 Tesla Megapacks a year.

Coal still supplies more power in the US than anything else, with natural gas next. However, building more coal and gas power plants to make miles for transport is counter-productive if the game plan is to reduce carbon output. California, Texas, Arizona, and Nevada were the hot spots for these additions. Wind and nuclear power make their mark. Wind power also had a strong showing, adding 2.5 Texas once again led the way with the Canyon Wind (309 MW) and Goodnight (266 MW) wind farms. GW, or 12%, of the new capacity.

The vision is fuelled by the fear of climate change and the need to find green alternatives to dirty coal, unpopular nuclear power and unreliable gas imports from Russia. Are we going to burn more oil, natural gas, or (gasp) coal to produce it? Wind, solar and nuclear could easily change our electrical sources.
