The US Department of Energy has selected projects by Basin Electric Power Cooperative and Hydrogen Energy International LLC—a joint venture between BP and Rio Tinto ( earlier post )—for up to $408 million in funding from the American Recovery and Reinvestment Act. Under this cost-shared research and development (R&D), DOE is awarding $51 million to nine new projects for coal and natural gas power and industrial sources. In prior work with DOE, MTR has advanced membrane CO 2 capture technology for coal power plants through small engineering scale testing and studies.
