An alliance of industry, academic and government organizations has formed to commercialize technologies that will utilize concentrated solar energy to convert waste CO 2 into synthetic fuels. and demonstrations will continue both at Sandia’s facilities in New Mexico and at a power plant project site in Bakersfield, Calif.

These efforts include fuel testing and validation, lifecycle analysis and support for Joule’s production facility in Hobbs, New Mexico, where demonstration-scale production of ethanol is underway. Joule and Audi formed a partnership in 2011 to accelerate the development and commercialization of CO 2 -neutral fuels.

Joule has pioneered a CO 2 -to-fuel production platform using engineered bio-catalysts continuously to convert waste CO 2 directly into renewable fuels such as ethanol or hydrocarbons for diesel, jet fuel and gasoline. This cleared the catalyst for commercial use at the company’s demonstration plant in Hobbs, New Mexico.

Because the process consumes waste CO 2 emissions, the resulting fuels can enable carbon-neutral transportation by supplanting their petroleum-derived counterparts. The company operates from Bedford, Massachusetts and The Hague, The Netherlands with production operations in Hobbs, New Mexico.

The waste heat given off during methanation is used as process energy in the adjacent biogas plant, significantly increasing overall efficiency. In parallel with the e-gas plant in Werlte, Audi also operates a research facility in Hobbs, New Mexico, USA, for the production of e-ethanol and e-diesel in collaboration with Joule.
