Switzerland-based Climeworks, a spin-off from the Swiss Federal Institute of Technology in Zurich (ETH), recently launched the world’s first commercial plant that captures atmospheric CO 2 for supply and sale to a customer. Climeworks aims to capture 1% of global CO 2 emissions by 2025.

A new study by the French institute Enerdata, commissioned by the European Federation for Transport & Environment (T&E), suggests that the European CO 2 standards for new vehicles due to come into effect in 2012 will lead not only to a European savings on oil (mainly via lower oil import volumes) but also to slightly lower global oil prices.

Less than a quarter of the proven fossil fuel reserves can be burnt and emitted between now and 2050, if global warming is to be limited to two degrees Celsius (2 °C), according to a new study published in the journal Nature today. Europcar Groupe has already implemented numerous environmental initiatives within the scope of a Green charter certified by Bureau Veritas in June 2008, including a recent announcement to display CO2 data for all its vehicle rentals. To date the Alliance has signed two final agreements in Europe with Portugal and the Principality of Monaco.
