CRI, founded in 2006 in Reykjavik, Iceland, is developing technology to produce renewable methanol from clean energy and recycled CO 2 emissions. In late April 2015, Geely Auto deployed a first-of-its-kind fleet of 150 methanol-fueled taxis in the southern Chinese city of Guiyang in cooperation with the municipal government.

Manufacturers will have to reduce emissions of their fleet significantly to meet the upcoming 2020 and 2021 targets. Vans registered in the EU and Iceland in 2018 emitted on average 158.1 of the new vans fleet (2.4% million new cars sold in the EU and in Iceland in 2018—almost one out of three—were SUVs.
