Injection of CO 2 began in a first-of-a-kind US Department of Energy–sponsored field trial of enhanced coalbed methane recovery with simultaneous CO2 sequestration in an unmineable coal seam. The field test is incorporating numerous site characterization and monitoring activities to ensure the safety and efficacy of CO2 injection.
DOE’s Southeast Regional Carbon Sequestration Partnership (SECARB) began injecting CO 2 at the test site in Russell County, Virginia, in mid-January. Earlier, an existing coalbed methane well had been converted for CO 2 injection, and two wells has been drilled to monitor reservoir pressure, gas composition, and the CO 2 plume.
Earlier, an existing coalbed methane well operated by El Paso Exploration & Production had been converted for CO 2 injection, and four wells drilled to monitor reservoir pressure, gas composition, water quality, and the CO 2 plume. The SECARB members began injecting CO 2 at the Alabama test site on 15 June 2010.
