The Swiss company Climeworks is building the world’s largest direct air capture (DAC) and storage facility for converting atmospheric CO 2 to rock in Iceland. The particularly high geothermal energy means that the Earth’s heat can be converted to electricity cost-effectively and virtually CO 2 neutrally.

In an event in Bern, Switzerland, Swiss National Council member and president of the Clean Fuel Now initiative Thomas Böhni filled up his Audi A2 with 100% synthetic diesel (Audi e-diesel) produced by sunfire GmbH to draw attention to the need to remove what he terms unjustified Swiss restrictions on synthetic fuels. The Mercedes-Benz eActros heavy-duty electric truck, with a range of up to 200 km, is in intensive use by customers in Germany and Switzerland as part of the eActros “innovation fleet”. Audi sees the potential for the use of CO 2 -neutral fuels to reduce fleet CO 2 emissions. The Audi e-gas plant can convert 6MW of input power. The process to convert isobutene to isooctane is well-established. Nearly 80% of the Blue Crude can be converted into synthetic diesel using existing refinery technologies.

But Nissan has announced that for North America, they too are converting over to CCS. Importantly, Tesla is about to offer a converter that allows Teslas to use CCS charging sites. If you totally decarbonize in Switzerland or in Canada (37 million people) and China keeps blowing ahead, it makes no difference.
